More than 5,000 firefighters are battling the fires that have engulfed Portugal.

Prime Minister Louis Montenegro said that "they are raging all over the country".

Temperatures in Portugal have exceeded 30 degrees Celsius over the weekend and are expected to remain high for days.

According to local media, at least two people died as a result of the fires.

Portuguese authorities have warned that there is a risk of fires breaking out in many central and northern regions of the country until Wednesday, while the threat will remain "very high" until Friday.

Ten thousand hectares of land have already burned between Porto and Aveiro in the north, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.

According to media reports, hospitals in the affected areas are accepting people with burns, breathing difficulties and other injuries from the fires.

Police have closed highways, including the main road between Lisbon and Porto.

At least 12 firefighters were injured - two of them seriously.

The EU said it will send eight firefighting planes to Portugal to help the country put out the flames.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the bloc "is mobilizing urgently" and asked other member countries to send aid as well./ REL
