The suspect in the assassination of Trump may have been waiting for 12 hours to

Ryan Routh, 58, the suspect in the assassination of presidential candidate Donald Trump waited 12 hours to kill him on the golf course in Florida.

The incident raised questions about how a gunman was able to get so close to Trump, just two months after another gunman shot him during a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Secret Service opened fire, spotted the gun through the bushes a few hundred meters away from the former president.

"All of a sudden we heard gunshots in the air. I think maybe four or five," Trump said in a post on social media platform X Spaces.

"The Secret Service knew right away it was bullets, and they protected me. The agents did a fantastic job."

While praising Secret Service agents, he added: "We need more people for protection."

The gunman fled in a sport utility vehicle, the court heard. Officers found the gun, a digital camera and a plastic bag of food left behind.

Ryan Routh, 58, was arrested about 40 minutes later driving north on Interstate 95. The license plates on his vehicle had been reported stolen from another car.

Records show a phone linked to Routh was placed on the golf course beginning at 1:59 a.m. (0559 GMT) Sunday morning, 11-1/2 hours before the incident.

The suspect was on the public side of a fence along the boundary of the golf course, Roëe said.

Routh was the subject of a 2019 FBI tip alleging he was a convicted felon in unlawful possession of a firearm, Jeffrey Veltri, agent in charge of the FBI's Miami field office, told reporters. ./ CNA
