Key points from Christopher Hill's testimony in The Hague

Retired American diplomat Christopher Hill has testified for three consecutive days in defense of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi at the Special Court in The Hague.

REL has brought the key points of his testimony in defense of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

During his three-day testimony, Hill spoke about Thaçi’s role in the Kosovo Liberation Army and the Rambouillet negotiations. He said his impression was that Thaçi was not a decision-making figure within the KLA, as he recalled that during the Rambouillet negotiations he had to consult with others within the KLA in advance and could not make decisions on his own.

On the third day of testimony, the panel asked Hill whether the KLA was structured, and he reiterated his position that there was no real hierarchy. However, he said that the KLA attempted to convince the US that it was a well-structured organization and army.

The judges also asked him about his meetings with then-Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic. Hill said Milosevic was concerned that the US was siding with the KLA and leaving the LDK aside.

Likewise, the signing of the Rambouillet agreement, according to him, refuted Milosevic's claim that Albanians could not come together and agree on anything.

Hill repeated the position expressed in the previous days of testimony, that he did not think Thaçi was one of the founders of the KLA, he did not know who was responsible in the KLA and who issued the communiqués.

The retired American diplomat reiterated on the third day of testimony that he had no information that Thaçi was involved in any illegal human rights violation activity. /REL
