Israeli Prime Minister's top adviser resigns
Ron Dermer

Israel's Minister of Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, who played a leading role in negotiations aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip and was a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has resigned.

Israeli media had reported for days that Dermer would leave the ministry to which he had been appointed at the end of 2022, after serving for many years as Israel's ambassador to Washington.

"I am writing to inform you of my decision to complete my term as Minister of Strategic Affairs ," Ron Dermer said in a letter to Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Dermer, who was born in the US, wrote that when he took office, he had promised his family that his term would not exceed two years, but he extended it twice, first to work with Netanyahu to counter the threat from Iran and then to negotiate a ceasefire deal in Gaza aimed at releasing Hamas hostages.

Dermer was one of Netanyahu's most trusted advisers, playing a key role in negotiations with the Trump administration and Arab countries. He had served as Israel's ambassador to Washington from 2013 to 2021. His term coincided with Donald Trump's first term in the White House (2017-2021).

Democratic officials believed Dermer had sided with Republicans during his time in the US capital, undermining the bipartisan relationship cultivated by previous Israeli ambassadors in Washington. /CNA
