A new urban cable car, the first of its kind in the Paris region, will open in December, aiming to ease travel for residents in the southeastern suburbs of the French capital.

From December 13, the cabs will begin transporting passengers through Limeil-Brévannes in Val-de-Marne, a suburb that has long been served only by buses.

The 4.5-kilometer route, with five stations, will take just 18 minutes from start to finish. Residents say they can't wait to try out the cable car cabins.

For local authorities, the cable car offered a cheaper and more practical option than building a tram or metro through this densely populated area.

The idea is not new, as more than 80 cities around the world already use urban cable cars, including Toulouse, which opened its line in 2022, and Grenoble, whose iconic bubbles have floated above the city for more than 90 years./CNA
