The man who broke into the home of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2022 and attacked her husband with a hammer was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Friday.

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley handed down the sentence to 44-year-old David DePape, who was convicted last November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on a family member of a federal official. The prosecution had requested 40 years of imprisonment.

De Pope remained silent as the judge read the sentence, occasionally looking down.

In a politically motivated attack, David DePape forced his way into Ms. Pelosi's home in San Francisco on October 28, 2022, a week before that year's congressional elections. At the time of the attack, Ms. Pelosi was in Washington.

De Pape admitted during the trial that his intention was to take Ms. Pelosi, who was then Speaker of the House of Representatives, the second-highest official in line for the presidency of the United States, hostage.

The 44-year-old struck Paul Pelosi in the head with a hammer before police arrived on the scene and subdued him.

DePape still faces separate state charges stemming from the attack on Mr. Pelosi, including attempted murder, a felony punishable by 13 years to life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty.
