Xi and Putin describe their relationship as a "stabilizing force" in

The Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, described the relations between their two countries as a "stabilizing force in the chaotic world", during their meeting in Beijing.

In the visit to China, Putin is seeking greater support from Beijing for the war the Russian leader has launched against Ukraine in 2022 and for his country's isolated economy.

This is the first trip abroad of Putin, who was also re-elected for a presidential term in the March elections.

Russia has been hit with unprecedented sanctions from the West since the start of the war against Ukraine.

During the meeting between Xia and Putin, the Chinese leader referred to his counterpart as an "old friend", adding that China-Russia relations are "helpful for peace".

"China is willing to work with Russia... to maintain justice in the world," Xi added.

Putin, meanwhile, told Xia that the relations between the two countries are "stabilizing factors in the international arena".

"Relations between Russia and China are not opportunistic and are not directed against anyone," Putin said, according to a statement issued by the Kremlin.

"Together, we respect the principles of justice and democratic world order that reflects multipolar realities and is based on international law," he added.

After the meeting behind closed doors. The two leaders signed a joint statement on deepening the "comprehensive strategic partnership" between their countries, China's state news agency Xinhua reported.

The Russian leader arrived in China on Wednesday, hours after he said Russian troops were advancing "on all fronts" on the battlefield in Ukraine after launching a major ground offensive.

Xi has rebuffed Western criticism of his country's close ties to Moscow.

China-Russia trade relations have flourished since the start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine, and in 2023, the value of trade between the two countries reached 240 billion dollars./ REL
