Kosovo and Serbia in Brussels, looking for a solution for the dinar

The chief negotiators of Kosovo and Serbia are meeting on Wednesday in Brussels with the mediation of the European Union, in search of a solution on the use of the Serbian dinar in Kosovo, two days after the deadline of the transitional plan which the Central Bank had determined to facilitate the implementation of regulation for cash payments.

A day ago, the European envoy for talks between the parties, Miroslav Lajcak, expressed hope for a temporary and lasting solution to this issue.

After the last meeting on May 25, Mr. Lajçak said that he has presented the parties with a compromise document in an attempt to overcome the differences, but without detailing what the proposal is about. The chief negotiators of Kosovo and Serbia accused each other of the failure of the talks.

The regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, which entered into force on February 1, determines that the euro is the only currency that can be used for ready payments in Kosovo. The regulation prompted an angry reaction from Belgrade, and concerns among Western diplomats about its impact on the lives of Kosovo Serbs who continue to be financially supported by Belgrade.

Diplomats have called on the government of Kosovo to suspend the regulation and give time to the affected citizens to adapt to the new situation.

Today's meeting is the seventh in a row in an attempt to find a solution to this issue, which has also become a topic of disagreement between the government in Pristina and Western diplomacy./ VOA
