WHO: Nothing wrong with Gaza casualty figures

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed full confidence in the data of the Ministry of Health in Gaza regarding the figures of the dead from the conflict in recent months.

The WHO has said it is getting closer to confirming the death toll, as Israel has questioned the figures.

Gaza's health ministry last week updated the death toll from the conflict that began on October 7 last year to 35,000, saying that around 25,000 have been fully identified - most of them women and children.

The Israel-Hamas conflict began after Hamas militants, the Palestinian group declared a terrorist by the United States and the European Union, attacked several Israeli settlements, killing around 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages.

Israel then launched an offensive in Gaza with the aim of destroying the group. Israel has recently responded, saying the figures are not accurate, as Palestinian authorities had initially estimated that more than 70 percent of those killed were women and children.

United Nations agencies have republished the Palestinian figures, which have now surpassed the figure of 35,000 dead.

"Nothing wrong with the data, the general data (more than 35,000) are still the same," WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said at a press conference in Geneva.

"The fact that we have 25,000 people identified is a step forward", he said.

He has said that he believes that about 60 percent of the victims are women and children and that many others who were left under the rubble will be in this category, when they are identified.

Lindmeier said that it is "normal" for the number of victims to change in conflicts, recalling that Israel has also reduced the number of victims after Hamas attacks./ Rel
