French police kill a man, tried to burn down the synagogue

French police have killed a gunman who wanted to set fire to a synagogue in the northwestern city of Rouen, France's interior minister said.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin praised the police "for their reaction and courage".

The mayor of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignaol, said that the attack on the synagogue did not only affect the Jewish community, but the whole city was shocked, the BBC reports. 

When they arrived at the scene, one of the officers shot the man, who was armed with a knife and an iron bar.

The mayor said firefighters were on the scene working to control the fire at the synagogue. 

France, along with the rest of Western Europe, has seen a rise in anti-Semitism since Hamas attacked southern Israel last October, leading to the current war in Gaza./ CNA
