The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has signed a law on Friday, which allows those sentenced to prison to serve under certain conditions in the Armed Forces of the country.

The Ukrainian Parliament had approved the draft law on May 8, after the Government had given up its opposition.

This law came into force at a time when Ukraine is facing a shortage of military personnel in the fight against the Russian army. Moscow launched its illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Kiev has criticized Russia for recruiting convicts from Russian prisons to fight in exchange for their release from prison.

Reports in recent months have found that ex-prisoners have committed serious crimes in the country after serving in the war.

Earlier, the Ministry of Justice had said that Ukraine is not forming something similar to the Russian mercenary group, Wagner, which has engaged rapists and murderers in its ranks. On Friday, Russia continued its attacks in the northeastern region of Ukraine, Kharkiv, where Moscow aims to create a "neutral zone".

The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, General Oleksandr Syrskiy, said on May 17 that the fighting zone has been expanded by 70 kilometers.

This has forced Kiev, which is already facing shortages on the battlefield, to send more troops to this war zone and weaken in other parts./ Rel
