European Parliament votes/Mercosur agreement rejected

The European Parliament rejected the Mercosur agreement at its meeting on Wednesday. In a narrow vote, 269 European lawmakers voted against the controversial agreement signed by the EU in December 2024 with the South American countries.

The European Commission, which has led the negotiations on this agreement for more than twenty years, had submitted it for ratification in the Council and for consensus in the European Parliament on September 3.

But even after this Wednesday vote, it is still unknown whether the final stages of the annulment will proceed smoothly.

The agreement, which liberalizes trade between the EU and Mercosur member countries - Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - lowers tariffs on many products, including some agricultural goods, raising concerns among European farmers about facing unfair competition from Latin American producers.

Opponents of the agreement also fear that Mercosur countries will not meet European phytosanitary and environmental standards, and have therefore prepared a resolution to be sent to the EU Court of Justice, calling on it to annul the agreement.

Meanwhile, supporters argue that the deal is essential for global trade, as it competes with tariffs recently imposed by the United States and is a response to Chinese imports. They say the agreement serves as a major trade corridor between more than 700 million people.

There is still no date for the plenary session vote on the Mercosur agreement./ CNA
