German mayor's injury/ Teenage daughter suspected

The newly elected mayor of the town of Herdecke in Germany, Iris Stalzer, was found in serious condition at home on Tuesday after suffering several stab wounds.

The emergency services were called by Stalzer's 17-year-old daughter. Iris Stalzer's life is now out of danger, while investigators have concluded that the main suspect in the injury is Stalzer's daughter.

Police questioned the 17-year-old and her 15-year-old brother. Two knives and clothes were found at the scene of the incident, which reportedly took place inside the walls of the house.

According to police investigator Jens Rautenberg, Iris Stalzer had stated on Tuesday evening that she thought the main suspect was her daughter. He did not comment on the nature of the family conflict or the motive for the act.

Prosecutor Bernd Haldorn said the two children would be released and placed in the custody of the Youth Welfare Office.

Regional broadcaster WDR has said it has received calls about violence from the Stalzer family in the past, while news magazine Spiegel said an incident was reported to police in the summer of this year involving Stalzer's daughter, who attacked her mother with a knife.

Iris Stalzer is expected to take office on November 1. She is a member of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), the junior party in Germany's conservative-led national government./CNA
