Hamas, declared a terrorist organization by the EU and the US, has demanded the release of its most important exponents, imprisoned by Israel, in Egypt's talks with Israel to stop the war in Gaza.
"This request is beyond the red line, which is being negotiated by our representative team in Egypt. Their release would mean the continuation of the war, not peace," Israeli security sources told Euronews.
Marwan Barghouti, Ahmad Sa'adat, Hassan Salameh and Abbas al-Sayed. These are the four most important names on the list of Hamas military leaders imprisoned in Israel, each with multiple life sentences.
But why does Hamas demand such a thing?
Hamas insists that these figures be released, because Sa'adat is seen as a symbol of Palestinian resistance, while Salameh is considered by Hamas as a national hero. Abbas al-Sayed has participated in terrorist attacks in the past, but his release is still being demanded. But the most important is Barghouti, who is considered the most influential figure in Palestinian politics, although the Trump peace plan excludes Hamas from involvement in the new government.
As negotiations continue in Egypt, the Israeli government has declined to comment to Euronews on Hamas' demands. Israel says that while it views the negotiations positively, it is still very wary of the tricks Hamas could use in the talks. The Israeli government is sticking to Trump's plan, while Hamas agrees in principle but wants additional talks on very important points of the plan.
The map shown by the White House includes three proposed phases of the Israeli troop withdrawal. The first phase leaves about 55% of Gaza under Israeli control, the second phase leaves 40% and the final 15%. But this map does not match Israel's military maps of militarized zones, and most importantly, neither gives a clear timeline for the upcoming withdrawal./CNA
