Kurti accuses Serbia of interfering in local elections in Kosovo

Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, accuses Serbia of interfering in the October 12 local elections in Kosovo by making promises of jobs and financial benefits.

Kurti said that the recent actions of Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? and other Serbian actors, state and non-state, "cannot be characterized as anything other than interference in the October local election process in Kosovo."

" Promises of jobs, enticement through financial support, conditioning and blackmail with social benefits, and statements by Serbian state officials that only the Serbian List protects Serbia in Kosovo, as the former Prime Minister of Serbia, Miloš Vu?evi?, recently did, and as President Vu?i? himself has done, are repeated methods of Serbia's intervention in Kosovo ," Kurti said.

Kurti said this during a meeting of the acting Government, where his cabinet allocated 100 euros each to the country's students for the start of the new academic year.

He called on the European Union to condemn Belgrade's interference in the Kosovo elections and to sanction Serbia for this.

Vu?i? told Serbia's Pink TV over the weekend:

"We will create 400 new jobs in the healthcare structure in Kosovo and 400 families ."

"This is something very big for Kosovo, and we will do this within the next ten days, so that people know that we will always take care of it," Vu?i? said.

Kurti emphasized that interference in the elections of other countries is interference in the form of violating the democracy and sovereignty of that country.

Serbia was also accused of interfering in the February general elections, and the EU observation mission said at the time that Serbia had interfered in the elections through pressure on Serb voters in Kosovo.

Serbia was also accused by Germany of interfering in the February 9 elections in Kosovo.

Kurti criticized the European Union for not doing anything to punish Serbia for this.

Meanwhile, in next weekend's local elections, the largest party of Kosovo Serbs, which enjoys the support of Serbia, the Serbian List, is expected to regain power in Serb-majority municipalities in Kosovo./ REL
