The Pope calls on young people not to lose hope for a better world

Pope Francis has called on young people around the world not to lose hope and to keep their dreams alive for a better future, during a closing Mass at the Catholic Church on World Youth Day in Lisbon.

"Don't be afraid," the pope said on Sunday, August 6 in Portugal, repeating his appeal several times.

Pope Francis told young people that they are very needed in a world surrounded by so many troubles.

Around 1.5 million worshipers took part in the mass held outdoors in Tejo Park in the Portuguese capital.

About the same number of people attended an outdoor prayer vigil on Saturday afternoon, most of whom had spent the night in camping tents in the park.

On Sunday afternoon, the pope met World Youth Day volunteers before returning to Rome in the evening.

About 700 bishops and over 10,000 priests joined the celebration at Sunday Mass. At the end of the mass, the pope announced that World Youth Day will be held in 2027 in the capital of South Korea, Seoul.

This will be the first time that World Youth Day is held in Asia, after the one in Manila in 1995./REL
