Russian tanker hit by drone at sea near Crimean bridge

A naval drone strike damaged a Russian tanker near the strategic bridge linking Russia with the annexed Crimean peninsula, Russian authorities said on Saturday.

Russian media said the SIG ship, approaching the Kerch Strait connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of ??Azov, was hit by Ukrainian drones. The Ukrainian Interfax news agency, citing an unnamed Ukrainian security service source, also said the Ukrainian navy was behind the drone attack in its territorial waters, Reuters writes.

No one was injured, but the Crimea Bridge and ferry services were suspended for several hours, according to officials installed by Russia in Crimea, which Moscow seized from Ukraine in 2014.

Kyiv rarely claims responsibility for attacks inside Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, but has said the destruction of Russia's military infrastructure increases its counteroffensive chances in the 17-month-old war.

A drone attack on the Russian naval base in Novorossiysk damaged a Russian warship on Friday, the first time the Ukrainian navy has projected its power so far from its shores.

SIG had supplied oil to Russian troops in Syria, according to Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed official in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region.
