Lithuania will close two of its six border crossings with Belarus due to concerns over the presence of Wagner's mercenaries, the deputy interior minister announced on Friday.
"We are preparing the decision to close the two border checkpoints," said Arnoldas Abramavicius to AFP.
According to him, the border crossing of Sumsko and that of Tvereciaus will be closed.
Lithuania, a NATO member state on the eastern wing of the alliance, is expected to formalize this decision next week.
Belarus - Moscow's ally - hosts Wagner's fighters, who moved to the country after rebelling against Russia's military.
The leaders of Lithuania and Poland said earlier this week that nearly 4,000 mercenaries are already stationed in Belarus.
Both countries are considering taking a joint decision to completely close the borders with Belarus, following concerns that Wagner fighters may try to cross the borders disguised as migrants and carry out provocative acts within the two countries.
Abramavicius said that in addition to closing the two border crossings, Lithuania should get ready "to completely close the border at any moment."
Both Poland and Lithuania have erected fences on their borders with Belarus and Russia, accusing Minsk and Moscow of orchestrating a flow of migrants to the European Union in order to destabilize the 27-nation bloc./REL
