Pakistan: 22 dead, 50 injured after train derails

At least 22 people were killed and more than 50 injured when a train derailed in southern Pakistan on Sunday, Pakistani officials said.

Younis Chandio, a senior police official, told local media on August 6 that rescue operations had begun to get people out of the wagons.

He said 10 carriages of the train derailed.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's railway minister, Khawaja Saad Rafique, said that “this is a very big accident. Rescue teams have arrived at the scene."

The train derailed near the Sahara railway station in the city of Nawabshah, in southern Sindh province.

Footage posted on social media shows dozens of people at the scene, some of them smashing windows to help passengers out of the overturned carriages.

Accidents and train derailments occur frequently in Pakistan's aging railway system.

In June 2021, two trains collided with each other near Daharki in Sindh, killing at least 65 people and injuring around 150 others.

At least 75 passengers were burnt in a fire that engulfed the Tezgam train in October 2019, while a collision between two trains in Ghotkit killed more than 100 people in 2005./ REL
