UN: Over 200 former Afghan officials killed since Taliban took power
Members of the UN Security Council condemn the actions of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan during a meeting in New York, US, on April 28, 2023.

The United Nations (UN) mission in Afghanistan said on August 22 that more than 200 former members of Afghanistan's military, law enforcement and government have been killed since the Taliban seized power in the country, despite an amnesty decision. .

The UN Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a report that it had recorded at least 218 extrajudicial killings since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in mid-2021 and up to June this year.

"In most cases, individuals were detained by de facto security forces, often for a short time, before being killed," the UNAMA report said.

Senior Taliban leaders have said that former government officials and former members of the military will be amnestied on the orders of their supreme leader.

The Taliban-led Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in response to UNAMA that it had received no reports of non-compliance with the amnesty order and that any cases that had occurred would be investigated.

About half of the killings recorded by UNAMA occurred in the first four months after the Taliban took power as US-backed foreign forces were withdrawing in August 2021, while 70 cases were recorded during 2022.

"For most of the violations mentioned in this report, there is limited information about the measures taken by the de facto authorities to investigate the incidents and hold the perpetrators accountable," UNAMA said, referring to the Taliban administration .

"The apparent impunity through which members of the de facto authorities continue to commit human rights violations against ex-government and ex-army officials is a serious concern," the report continues .
