Fine air pollution caused the death of more than 250,000 people in the European Union in 2021, said a report by the European Environment Agency (EEA), published on 24 November.

Fine particles, or PM2.5, refer to particles that are mainly created by smoke emitted by cars and coal-fired power plants.

These fine particles can get deep into the respiratory tract, putting people at risk of bronchitis, asthma and lung disease.

"According to the EEA's latest estimates, at least 253,000 deaths in the EU in 2021 were attributed to exposure to PM2.5 particles that were polluted beyond the level recommended by the World Health Organization," said the agency's report. of the EU.

The agency said these deaths "could have been avoided... if concentrations of fine particles were at the level of WHO recommendations."

The report presents higher death tolls compared to 2020, when it was estimated that 238,000 people had died due to air pollution.

According to the European Environment Agency, the increase in the number of deaths can be explained by the increase in exposure to pollutants and the increase in mortality in Europe, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic./ REL
