Criminal who helped inspire 'Stockholm syndrome' theory dies

One of the two criminals involved in the kidnapping that gave the world the term "Stockholm syndrome" has died at the age of 78.

The news was announced by his family.

Clark Olofsson - who became globally famous in 1973 after a kidnapping and bank robbery in the Swedish capital - died after a long illness, his family told online media outlet Dagens ETC.

During a six-day siege, Olofsson's hostages began to sympathize with him and his accomplice, defending their actions, while becoming more hostile to the police outside.

The incident gives its name to a theorized psychological condition where kidnapping victims develop love for their captors.

Since then, experts have debated whether Stockholm syndrome is a true psychiatric condition, with some arguing that it is a defense mechanism for dealing with traumatic situations.

The term was coined after the siege by Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist Nils Bejerot to explain the seemingly unreasonable love that some captives felt for their captors.

Olofsson was a repeat offender and spent most of his life in prison. He was last released in 2018 after serving a sentence for a drug-related offense in Belgium./ CNA
