Cyprus police have launched a search for Russian oligarch Vladislav Baumgertner, 56, who has been missing since January 7 from his Limassol apartment.

From 2003 to 2013, Baumgertner held the position of Commercial Director and later headed the Russian company 'Uralkali'. From March 2017 to October 2021, he served as Executive Director of the company 'Aleo'.

When he flew to Belarus in 2013 at the invitation of then-Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich, he was arrested. He was held in a KGB detention center.

His arrest was preceded by the Belarusian-Russian conflict over potash, which began after Uralkali announced the cessation of sales through the Belarusian Potash Joint Stock Company (BPC) CJSC. Both Uralkali and the state-owned enterprise Belaruskali carried out sales through this trader. At the same time, both sides accused each other of uncoordinated sales bypassing the BPC. /CNA
