Merz to 'Bild': Hamas can have no future role in governing Gaza

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that recent propaganda videos released by Hamas showing Israeli hostages only further underline that the terrorist group can have no future role in governing Gaza.

In an interview with the Bild newspaper, the German chancellor insists that the videos of the emaciated hostages Ram Braslavski, a German-Israeli citizen, and Evyatar David, show that Hamas should no longer play a role in the future of Gaza.

But Merz calls on Israel not to "respond to Hamas' cynicism" by halting humanitarian aid to the territory, where UN-mandated experts have warned of widespread famine.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his horror at the signs of life from hostages Rom Breslavski and Evyatar David, who appeared to be in deteriorating physical condition.

On his 'X' account, he wrote that

"Hamas is torturing hostages, terrorizing Israel, and using the Gaza population as human shields. Hamas should not be part of Gaza's future. The release of the hostages is a precondition for a ceasefire. Israel should not react to Hamas' cynicism and continue to provide humanitarian aid." /CNA
