High temperatures/ Japan records warmest month since 1898

The month of August has just begun, and so has the temperature data for the month of July that we just left behind.

Japan recorded its hottest July since 1898, the country's meteorological agency (JMA) said, at a time when climate change is fueling scorching heatwaves around the world.

It was the third consecutive year that the archipelago has recorded the highest average monthly temperature for July, the JMA said.

Temperatures in the country were 2.89 degrees Celsius above "normal" temperatures for the season, the JMA said, breaking the record set in July 2024.

On Wednesday, Japan recorded a record high of 41.2 degrees Celsius in Hyogo Prefecture in the west, as the country experienced its hottest June ever recorded.

The archipelago also recorded light rainfall in July in a large number of areas, especially in the north and especially in areas along the Sea of Japan, the meteorological agency added.

This year, the rainy season ended in the western part about 3 weeks earlier than usual.

Scientists confirm that human-caused climate change is making heat waves more intense, more frequent and more widespread. /CNA
