A mine collapses in Chile

One miner died and five others went missing after an accident at the El Teniente mine in Chile, authorities announced on Friday.

The mine, owned by the National Copper Corporation, is widely considered the largest underground copper mine in the world.

The accident occurred late Thursday in a tunnel inside the Andesita project, located in the O'Higgins Region of central Chile.

The tunnel collapsed after a 4.2 magnitude seismic event, according to the president of the state-owned company, Maximo Pacheco, caused by mining activity in the area.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and managed to extract one body, but were unable to fully enter the collapsed area to rescue the remaining workers.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased miner, Paulo Marin Tapia, on his X account.

Experts say the next 48 hours are critical for the rescue mission, as the five miners remain isolated with an unknown health condition, Anadolu reports.

Chile has a long history of mining incidents. The 1945 El Teniente disaster, in which 355 miners died, remains the worst metal mining accident in the country's history. In August 2010, a collapse at the San Jose mine trapped 33 miners 700 meters underground. After a 69-day rescue effort, all 33 miners were successfully pulled to the surface.
