The Court of Appeal has terminated the detention of five police officers, who are suspected of the criminal offense of "negligent homicide" of 27-year-old Agon Zejnullahu.

This was announced by lawyer Besnik Berisha, the defense attorney of one of the suspects in this case.

"This was not just a battle for the release of the five officials, it was a battle for reason, for right, and to not allow fear of public opinion to replace the law," he wrote on Facebook.

The Basic Court in Pristina, branch in Lipjan, on July 9th sentenced five police officers to one month's detention. However, on July 17th, the Appeal Court annulled the Basic Court's ruling.

The case was sent for reconsideration and on July 23, the Basic Court again decided to keep the five police officers in custody. The defense filed an appeal against this decision with the Court of Appeal.

Agon Zejnullahu, 27, died in the early hours of July 7, after being arrested by police in Lipjan.

The medical team also confirmed his death at the scene.

Police said the deceased was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and attacking vehicles and passersby when he was stopped by law enforcement.

But family members and their lawyer said that the police used excessive force against the 27-year-old.

Several civil society representatives have also said something similar, after seeing some images that have circulated on the internet.
