Tsunami waves hit Hawaii

The first waves caused by a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia have reached Hawaii, with a 1.2-meter wave recorded on Oahu.

Residents in Hawaii, parts of the US West Coast and Japan have been told to evacuate after one of the strongest earthquakes hit Russia's eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has urged people to follow evacuation orders and remain calm, while US President Donald Trump advised Americans to be on alert for tsunami warnings.

In Japan, 1.9 million people have been told to evacuate and a 1.3-meter tsunami wave has reached the northern prefecture of Iwate, according to the country's meteorological agency.

Tsunami warnings of varying levels have also been issued for parts of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, Peru and the Galapagos Islands near Ecuador./ CNA
