Helicopters over Los Angeles coast emit sirens and tsunami warnings

Law enforcement helicopters have been deployed along the Los Angeles coastline, warning boaters and people along the beach via loudspeakers that a tsunami warning is in effect.

The warning advises people to seek higher ground before 1 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET).

Authorities in Los Angeles are on standby to respond to any potential tsunami effects along the coast, said Mayor Karen Bass.

"While the National Weather Service currently predicts a surge of less than 12 inches from the earthquake in the early morning hours, the City of Los Angeles is making substantial preparations to respond if the forecast changes conditions in Los Angeles, particularly in the Port of Los Angeles and coastal communities."

Among the departments on standby overnight are police and fire brigade battalions stationed in coastal areas.

Emergency crews and buses are also on standby to assist with any possible evacuation orders, the mayor's office said.

A tsunami warning is in effect for coastal regions of Southern California, with the National Weather Service saying Port San Luis, near Avila Beach, remains the main point of concern.

According to CNN Weather, Port San Luis is forecast to have 24 hours of waves up to 3.7 meters higher than normal, while Crescent City is forecast to have 30 hours of waves up to 4.8 meters higher than normal./ CNA
