Saudi Arabia and France to lead UN efforts to recognize Palestinian statehood

Saudi Arabia and France have opened a three-day conference at the United Nations aimed at recognizing Palestinian statehood as part of a peaceful solution to end the war in Gaza.

The conference began on Monday, just days after French President Emmanuel Macron said Paris would formally recognize the Palestinian government in September in an effort to revive peace talks over a two-state solution, which have been almost canceled since the deadly Hamas raid and the subsequent Israeli military operation, which began in 2023.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the conference would also serve as a platform for other European countries to recognize Palestinian statehood.

While Barrot did not specify which countries he had in mind, speculation has focused on the United Kingdom, where Keir Starmer is under increasing pressure from Labour MPs to pressure Israel to end the war.

"Only a two-state political solution will help fulfill the legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security." "There is no other alternative," Barrot said at the opening of the talks on Monday.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, said the kingdom was seeking World Bank approval to transfer $300 million to Gaza and the West Bank to address the severe humanitarian crisis in the territory.

He said the Palestinians had a "legitimate right" to establish an independent state along the borders drawn up in 1967 "with East Jerusalem as its capital."

"This is not just a political stance, but a strong conviction that an independent Palestinian state is the real key to peace in the region," he said./ CNA, translated by "The Guardian"
