Russia: Cooperation with NASA in space continues until 2028

The head of the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, said he has agreed with his counterpart at NASA, during talks in the United States, to extend the operation of the International Space Station (ISS) until 2028.

Space remains one of the last areas of cooperation between the US and Russia, at a time when relations between Moscow and Washington are almost completely broken due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Roscosmos announced earlier this week that the agency's director, Dmitry Bakanov, had traveled to the United States for talks with NASA's acting administrator, Sean Duffy.

This was the first meeting between the heads of the two countries' space agencies since 2018.

"The dialogue went well. We agreed that we will keep the ISS in operation until 2028... and we will work on the issue of deorbiting it by 2030," Bakanov was quoted as saying, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Bakanov was also expected to meet with NASA's Crew-11 mission team, including Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, before launch aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft.

The ISS was created by Russia, the United States, Europe and Japan, and its assembly began in 1998.

The station was planned to be operational until 2024, but the US National Space Administration (NASA) has said that the ISS will remain operational until 2030.

As part of the numerous sanctions imposed on Russia following its aggression against Ukraine, many Western countries have suspended cooperation with Roscosmos.

Russia's space program, which for decades has been a source of pride for the country, has been suffering from chronic underfunding and corruption scandals for years./REL
