Detention order for former ministers and other suspects in Novi Sad case

The Supreme Court in Belgrade has confirmed to Radio Free Europe that it has issued a one-month detention order for 13 suspects for corruption in the case of the reconstruction of the railway station in Novi Sad, and the modernization of the railway from Novi Sad to the border with Hungary.

Among those arrested and being held are former ministers: Tomislav Momirovi? and Goran Vesi?.

The detention decision is not final, and the suspects' lawyers can appeal the decision within three days, the court told Radio Free Europe.

Former Minister of Construction, Tomislav Momirovic, and 11 other suspects who have been questioned have denied any wrongdoing in connection with the corruption case in the railway reconstruction project.

Goran Vesic, who was Minister of Construction at the time of the collapse of the railway station shelter, was not questioned because the medical documents that were submitted stated that he was in the hospital for medical treatment, the Prosecutor's Office announced on August 2.

All those arrested are suspected of having damaged the state budget to the tune of $115 million in the project for the reconstruction and modernization of the railway line from Novi Sad to the border with Hungary.

Among those arrested and in custody are Goran Vesic's assistant in the ministry, Anita Dimoski, and the former director of the "Railway Infrastructure of Serbia", Nebojsa Shurlan.

Four months after its reconstruction and official opening, a shelter collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station, killing 16 people.

The incident of November 1, 2024, has sparked massive protests against the government throughout Serbia.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in the last eight months, calling for political and criminal accountability for the accident.

The focus of the protests is the assumption that corruption resulted in the collapse of the railway station shelter./ REL
