Water crisis in Iran/ President Pezeshkian: Risk of massive outages in Tehran

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian warned against excessive water consumption, which he said was unsustainable for the country and could leave Tehran facing severe shortages by September, the Tasnim news agency reported.

Faced with resource mismanagement and overconsumption, Iran has faced repeated shortages of electricity, gas, and water during months of peak demand.

"If we in Tehran cannot manage the situation and if people do not cooperate with us and we fail to control consumption, there will be no more water left behind our dams," Pezeshkian said during a visit to Zanjan in the northwest.

The president said stocks could run out by October, the first month of autumn in the Persian calendar, when schools reopen and demand typically increases before the start of the rainy season.

Nationally, the average reservoir level is only 44 percent.

Authorities have asked residents to install water tanks and pumps to cope with supply disruptions.

Many families have reported repeated outages in recent weeks.

The country has faced drought conditions for the past five years, according to the director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Sheena Ansari, and the Meteorological Organization recorded a 40% drop in rainfall over the past four months compared to a long-term average. /CNA
