With 8 people on board/ The US military plane crashes near the Japanese island

A United States military aircraft with eight people on board crashed in the ocean near the Japanese island of Yakushima, Japan's coast guard said on November 29.

The downed plane in western Japan was an Osprey. A Coast Guard spokesman said there were no other details about the incident, including the people aboard the plane.

The plane crashed at around 02:47 local time. Local residents have reported that the plane's left engine caught fire as it crashed into the ocean.

The US military has not yet commented on this incident.

The crash of the American plane comes after a similar plane crashed in northern Australia in August, killing three of the 23 crew members on board. The Boeing MC-22B Osprey plane crashed on Melville Island, Australia, during a military exercise./ CNA
