Austria will issue its new passport next month, aiming to make it one of the most modern and secure passports in the world.

Starting December 1, 2023, Austrians are eligible to apply for the new passport in almost 900 municipalities and district administrations in Austria, reports  SchengenVisaInfo.com.

Identity protection and anti-counterfeiting measures were top priorities when the passport was redesigned, according to Austria's interior minister, Gerhard Karner.

As the Austrian authorities have announced, the design of the passport has been completely changed. The new passport has a polycarbonate (plastic) data page with a QR code, which the country previously started using on its ID card. With the free application of the Ministry of Interior "CHECK-AT", the code offers easy electronic control.

With the launch of the new passport, there will be no additional fees for citizens. Currently, the passport fee in Austria is €75.90 for adults, €30 for children up to twelve years old and is free for children up to two years old.

Passports that were previously issued will remain valid until their expiration date.

The Austrian government has been working on the development of a new passport since 2020, with a group of experts from the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the state police departments of Lower Austria and Burgenland.

Overall, the Austrian passport is among the most powerful passports in the world. Currently ranked 17th based on the VisaGuide.World Passport Index, it guarantees its citizens visa-free entry to 104 countries and passport-free entry to 40 countries./ CNA
