US government shutdown: Nearly 2,000 flights canceled and delayed

More than 2,000 flights in the US were canceled or delayed today after airlines were told to reduce traffic due to the government shutdown.

Domestic flights at 40 of the country's busiest airports will be affected as officials try to ease pressure on air traffic controllers.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says the reductions will start at 4% of domestic flights before increasing to the full 10% by the end of next week. It has also warned that up to 4,000 flights a day could be affected.

Some of the largest US airlines are assuring customers that they will be able to receive full refunds for canceled flights. /CNA
