"Solution to end the conflict in Gaza"/ Pope Leo welcomes President Mahmoud Abbas

Pope Leo XIV received the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, this Thursday. The reception took place in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican.

This meeting comes almost a month after the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip came into effect.

According to the Holy See Press Office, during the meeting it was acknowledged that there is an urgent need to provide assistance to the civilian population in Gaza and to end the conflict by pursuing a two-state solution.

This is the first meeting between the Pope and the 90-year-old Palestinian leader, who was last hosted at the Vatican by Pope Francis on December 12, 2024.

Abbas spoke with the Pope by phone on July 21. The conversation focused on the evolution of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the violence in the West Bank./CNA
