Caused at least 140 deaths in the Philippines / Typhoon Kalmaegi hits Vietnam

Typhoon Kalmaegi hit central Vietnam on Thursday, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate the area where one of the world's deadliest cyclones will pass this year.

This week, Kalmaegi caused widespread damage in the Philippines, leaving at least 140 people dead and 127 missing after flooding caused by the storm.

The typhoon hit Vietnam with winds reaching up to 149 kilometers per hour, the Ministry of Environment said.

"The wind is so strong that nothing can withstand it ," Vietnamese resident Vu Van Hao, 48, told AFP.

The central part of Vietnam, which was hit by the typhoon, had already faced floods a week earlier that killed at least 47 people.

"This is a major typhoon with terrible destructive capacity," said Pham Anh Tuan, a top official in Gia Lai province. State media said more than 7,000 people were evacuated in the province overnight.

Vietnam is located in one of the most active regions in the world for tropical cyclones and is usually hit by about ten typhoons or storms per year, but Kalmaegi is the thirteenth storm to hit the country in 2025.

According to scientific data, human-caused climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and more destructive.

Kalmaegi hit the Philippines hard on Monday, causing damage to the islands of Cebu and Negros before returning to sea. The storm caused widespread flooding in the Philippines, which declared a state of national disaster.

More than 500,000 people in the Philippines have been displaced by the storm. Vietnam, which has a 3,200-kilometer coastline and a network of 2,300 rivers, faces a high risk of flooding.

Natural disasters have already killed or gone missing 279 people this year and caused more than $2 billion in damage, according to Vietnam's National Statistics Office. /REL
