European Commission: We could have a high-speed rail network by 2040

The European Commission said on Wednesday that a high-speed rail network could be possible by 2040. The European Commission said that under this plan, trains could reach speeds of over 250 km/h, where possible, to provide faster connections across the continent.

If the plan goes ahead, passengers on these trains could travel between the German and Danish capitals in four hours, instead of seven hours today, while Sofia and Athens would be just six hours apart by 2035, instead of nearly 14 hours now. The new cross-border links would also cut a journey between Lisbon and Madrid to three hours, from nine at present.

EU transport commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas said the plans set out to create  “a truly European high-speed rail network by 2040.” The commission has predicted that this would also make train travel a more attractive travel option.

External experts, according to the commission, have estimated that 546 billion euros are needed to triple the size of the high-speed network, allowing trains to travel at speeds over 250 km/h.

As part of a long list of actions, the EU executive has promised a financing strategy and will seek to use EU funds to boost national governments and private investment, in particular to pay for infrastructure and rolling stock. Other elements of the plan include improved signalling and ticketing systems across Europe.

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) hailed the plans as a step forward for sustainable travel. The European industry body, the Community of Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), also welcomed the plans. /CNA
