PHOTOS - Cargo plane crashes in the US and bursts into flames / 11 people die

At least nine people were killed Tuesday evening when a UPS cargo plane crashed while taking off from an airport in Kentucky, USA. 

The plane, which was headed to Honolulu, Hawaii, crashed into two nearby businesses while attempting to take off, namely an automotive business and an oil recycling company.

The powerful crash sent a giant plume of smoke into the air visible across much of Louisville. Meanwhile, 16 different families have reported their loved ones missing after the crash. Two workers at the auto business affected by the incident are also reported missing, and it is not known how many customers were in their premises when the accident occurred.

A preliminary investigation into the tragic incident has begun, but officials say it is too early to say what caused the crash. Authorities reported that inspections at the crash site could take several days. Meanwhile, photos of the moment the fire broke out and a giant cloud of smoke were also published on social media.

Officials said the massive flames after the crash were caused by the amount of fuel on board the plane, which was about 144,000 liters. It has not yet been confirmed what cargo was on board, although officials have said the plane was not carrying anything that could create an increased risk of contamination. /CNA
