Belgium to strengthen airspace security after drone incidents

Belgium's defense minister said that the National Airspace Security Center aims to become operational by January 1, 2026.

Belgium convened a National Security Council session on Thursday after drones were spotted over military bases and airports, causing a series of flight disruptions and diversions from the main airport in Brussels.

To address this threat, authorities are considering the creation of an airspace surveillance center, as well as the introduction of mandatory drone registration.

"We will make the NASC, which is the National Air Security Center, operational from January 1. It will be in Beauvechin, at the military base. This already exists, but it needs to be more operational with all the security services within it, so this is the first and biggest challenge for the coming weeks," Defense Minister Theo Francken told the media.

"We are working on the 'detection, identification and possible neutralization' model. It is the framework we are working on," added Interior Minister Bernard Quintin.

The drone strikes came as the EU is pressuring Belgium to seize frozen Russian assets held at Euroclear in Brussels so that reconstruction loans can be issued to Ukraine./ CNA
