G7 countries meet/Discussions on security and Ukraine

The G7 countries focused on discussions, particularly on US policies on trade, security and Ukraine, at the meeting held in the town of La Malbaie in Quebec, Canada, against a backdrop of weeks of diplomatic tension.

Despite the challenges, G7 ministers managed to present a united front on Friday, allaying fears that divisions could be exploited by Russia or China.

"I think we are on the right track to have a strong statement. I am confident that this can be the case," Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said shortly before ministers approved the final comment.

The joint statement notes that productive talks have taken place.

"When it comes to various issues, Ukraine and the Middle East, we have had productive discussions and the aim was to strengthen G7 solidarity," the statement said.

The Group of Seven countries, consisting of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, along with the European Union, demonstrated cohesion in the final communiqué, reaffirming unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence./CNA
