The new president of Greece is sworn in / Who is Konstantinos Tasoulas?

This Thursday, the country's new president, Konstantinos Tasoulas, was sworn in. His swearing-in ceremony took place at the parliament building in Athens.

Appointed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, he will now serve a five-year term in the largely ceremonial role. He succeeds Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the country's first woman to hold the post.

A lawyer and senior legislator, Tasoulas previously served as culture minister and deputy defense minister under conservative New Democracy governments. He was also speaker of the Assembly for three terms.

On February 12, Tasoulas was elected president, receiving 160 votes from the 300-seat Greek parliament in the fourth round of voting.

After his election, he pledged to promote Greece on the international stage.

"Greece must further enhance its international standing, while also striving for progress and confidence at home. I believe these goals are widely shared," Tasoulas said.

Who is Konstantinos Tasoulas?

Tasoulas was born in Ioannina on July 17, 1959. He studied at the Athens Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, graduating in law in 1981. He has worked as a lawyer in Athens and London.

He previously served as President of the Hellenic Parliament from 2019 to 2025. A member of the New Democracy Party, he was the MP for Ioannina from 2000 to 2025. He also served briefly as Minister of Culture and Sports from 2014 to 2015 during the government of Antonis Samaras./CNA
