Suspicions of corruption in the European Parliament/ Belgian prosecutors

Belgian police raided more than 20 addresses in the early hours of this Thursday morning, including the offices of Chinese technology giant Huawei in Brussels, as part of a corruption investigation affecting the European Parliament.

Authorities have opened an ongoing investigation into preliminary allegations of active corruption, document forgery, and money laundering in the European Parliament, a spokesperson for the Belgian Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

According to reports, lobbyists for the Chinese tech giant paid bribes to MEPs to influence EU decision-making. Sources told newspapers that around 15 current and former MEPs could be involved in the case.

Police targeted 20 addresses in Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia, as part of an undercover operation. They sought evidence of possible crimes, including bribery, forgery, money laundering and criminal organization. Several people have been arrested./ CNA
