Imposition of 25% tariffs on metals/ EU reacts

The European Union has reacted to the 25% increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the US.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that the EU will respond with countermeasures worth $28 billion.

" As the US imposes tariffs worth $28 billion, we are responding with countermeasures worth €26 billion ($28 billion )," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.

 

The EC President said it is not in our common interest to burden economies with tariffs.

“ We always remain open to negotiations. We strongly believe that in a world filled with geopolitical and economic uncertainty, it is not in our common interest to burden our economies with tariffs ,” von der Leyen said.

The EC said that the countermeasures will hit steel and aluminum products, but also textiles, leather products, household appliances, plastic and wood products.

Agricultural products will also be affected, including poultry, beef, some seafood, dried fruits, eggs, sugar and vegetables./ CNA
