Suspicions of misuse of EU funds in Serbia/ European Public Prosecutor's

The European Public Prosecutor's Office, led by Laura Kövesi, has launched an investigation into possible misuse of European Union funds in the Novi Sad Railway Station case.

This was confirmed to European media and Kövesi stated that he is providing this information to the public due to extremely high interest.

"Due to the very high public interest, the Prosecutor's Office confirms that there is an ongoing investigation into the possible misuse of EU funds involving the Novi Sad railway station. In order not to jeopardize the outcome of this investigation, further details cannot be made public," the prosecutor said.

The statement further explains that the Prosecutor's Office should decide on the exercise of its jurisdiction when fraud occurs involving EU funds allocated to non-EU countries or non-participating EU Member States.

The Prosecutor's Office is responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to justice the perpetrators of criminal offences against the financial interests of the EU. These offences include various types of fraud, VAT fraud over 10 million euros, money laundering, corruption, etc. The Prosecutor's Office conducts investigations, prosecutes criminal cases and functions as a prosecutor before the competent courts of the EU member states, until the final resolution of the case./CNA
