Cuba on the ground, after the failure of the electrical grid

Cuba's power grid failed again Saturday morning, leaving the entire country without power, state media reported.

CubaDebate, one of the country's state-run media outlets, reported that Cuba's electricity grid operator, UNE, announced at 6:15 a.m. that "the national power system has been completely disconnected."

"Unioni Elektrik is working to restore the power supply", said the operator.

Cuba's power grid went down for the first time around noon on Friday after one of the island's largest power plants went down, suddenly leaving more than 10 million people without power.

Even before the grid failure, a power outage on Friday had forced Cuba's communist government to send state workers home and order classes to be closed in victory schools in an effort to conserve fuel for generators.

But lights started coming back on in scattered areas of the island on Friday evening, giving hope that power would be restored.

The network operator has yet to provide details on what caused the network to fail again on Saturday, or how long it will take to fix the network.

Cuba's government has blamed aging infrastructure, fuel shortages and increased demands for electricity for the huge cuts — often 10 to 20 hours a day across much of the island — in recent weeks.
