Hezbollah says it will escalate the war with Israel

Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, said on Friday it would "escalate" the war against Israel following the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, the group designated as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union.

Iran, meanwhile, indicated that it has no intention of changing its support for Hamas after Sinwar's murder, saying that "the spirit of resistance will strengthen."

Sinwar, named as the architect of the October 7, 2023 attack that triggered the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, was killed in southern Gaza by an Israeli strike. Hezbollah showed persistence as well, announcing "the transition to a new escalating phase in the war with Israel."

Hezbollah, which controls southern Lebanon, has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted its armed wing but not its political party.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah erupted a year ago when the Iran-backed group began firing rockets into northern Israel in support of the Palestinian militant group Hamas at the start of the war in Gaza.

In recent weeks, the conflict has escalated, as Israel has been relentlessly bombing southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut and the Bekaa Valley, killing many of Hezbollah's top leaders and sending ground troops across the border.

For its part, Hezbollah has fired rockets deeper into Israel.

Israel says its war in Lebanon is aimed at making northern Israel safe for tens of thousands of people who have been forced from their homes over the past year by Hezbollah rocket attacks.

Israel's expanded operation has displaced more than 1.2 million people, according to the Lebanese government, which says more than 2,100 people have been killed and more than 10,000 wounded during a year of fighting.

Hezbollah rockets have killed at least 54 people in Israel, more than half of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities.
