Macedonian Prime Minister Mickoski re-elected as leader of VMRO-DMPNE party

North Macedonia's Prime Minister, Hristian Mickoski, was re-elected as leader of VMRO-DPMNE, thus beginning his third term as leader of this right-wing party, which is the largest party in the country.

Mickoski was the sole candidate for the leadership of VMRO-DPMNE and was unanimously elected by the party's approximately 800 congressmen.

In his speech at the congress, Mickoski focused on his country's European path, which remains at a standstill due to his country's differences with Bulgaria, while accusing the EU of being unable to offer a solution to the problem.

"Serious challenges await us. We have an open issue with Bulgaria, but it seems that there are no interlocutors on the other side. We want to reach a fair solution, but for every agreement I want to know, unlike my predecessors in the government, what Macedonia and its citizens gain from all this. The European Union seems unwilling to facilitate this process, mainly due to its own internal problems," said the VMRO-DPMNE leader.

Mickoski was first elected president of VMRO-DPMNE in December 2017, succeeding his political mentor Nikola Gruevski, who fled to Hungary almost a year later, where he was granted political asylum by his political ally Viktor Orbán, to avoid serving a two-year prison sentence handed down to him for a corruption case when he was Prime Minister of North Macedonia. /CNA
