US National Security Plan Stirs Fears in EU

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas sought to downplay tensions with the US after the Trump administration published a National Security document in which it harshly criticized European allies.

Kallas' comments come as many European leaders fear that the US government is increasingly turning its back on Europe, particularly over support for Ukraine, which is defending itself from Russian invasion.

"There are a lot of criticisms in that document, but I think some of them are also true; if you look at Europe, it has underestimated its power towards Russia ," Kallas said on a panel at the Doha Forum in Qatar.

"We need to have more self-confidence ," she said, adding that "the US is still our greatest ally."

"I think we haven't always agreed on different topics, but I think the general principle continues to exist. We are the greatest allies and we must stand united," Kallas said.

What does the US national security document say?

The US National Security Strategy document, which was posted on the White House website on Friday (05.12), reflects criticism of Europe that had already been presented in February in a harsh speech by Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference.

The strategy also appears to support the white supremacist conspiracy theory of the "Great Replacement," according to which white European populations are being deliberately replaced by non-white peoples.

The document says that some countries risk becoming "majority non-European" and that Europe is facing "the real and strong prospect of the extinction of civilization." It goes on to say that "if current trends continue, the continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less."

The strategy plan says Europe is facing issues such as "censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, declining birth rates and the loss of national identities and self-confidence."

"Our goal should be to help Europe correct its current trajectory. We will need a strong Europe to help us compete successfully and to cooperate with us to prevent any adversary from dominating Europe ," the US National Security Strategy document states. /DW
